I made a test with NAT, if I set the "Host Only adapter" address to 192.168.1.46 (my local network) and leaves the DHCP server in the 192.168.56.xx range, the traffic is routed nicely from the guest through the host to my router and the router will reply nicely - only problem is that the guest traffic is re-addressed inthe host before send to he router thus there is no way the reply will ever end up in the guest again - I cant figure out whether it is VB or Windows, who do the re-addressing looks like it is VB "Host only interface" though. I would of course like to keep it as simple as possible, after all I'll be the support for the group so a no brainer i preferable - and then there is the thing, that I could not make bridge work either. If you can let us know which computers you want to access the web server guest we can help you pick the right kind of network. Once you have the Virtualbox network set up, it's all basic networking skills thereafter. Keep in mind that without special esoteric routing setups, 10.0.2.# won't talk to, etc. Bridged will be in the range your host physical connection receives from the router - perhaps the 192.168.1.#? See the manual, section 6, on the networking types available.

Regarding the 32-bit/64-bit limitation, see I have a 64bit host, but can't install 64bit guests If it doesn't, even after updating the Wi-Fi adapter card driver, then you won't be able to Bridge with Wi-Fi.

Bridged doesn't always work with Wi-Fi, due to poorly-written Wi-Fi adapter drivers and/or wireless access point firmware. Downgrade to 5.1.6 if you really want to use NAT.īridged should work unless you're connecting with a Wi-Fi adapter. I have tried with numerous clean installs of different flavours of VB - all with the same result - what
Ubuntu - /etc/nf gets overwritten on reboot. I would have expected VB to forward the dns request to 192.168.56.1, but I can not change that in On MS Network monitor I only get broadcasts from the quest 192.168.56.1 to 255.255.255.255 and on VB shows, that my dns request is attempted forwarded

I investigated the NAT function on the Debian guest (clean VB and Ubuntu install)Ī tcpdump of apt-get update on the Ubuntu quest shows, that Ubuntu tries to forward dns request I've tried sfc /scannow - no succes and no errors I can not even get the default NAT to work, occasionally it is half way there but after a guest restart, VB restart or pc reboot nothing works again - I have also tried bridged mode, host only, both with no success. I have used VB for years to run programs (no network use) that could not be run in my daily windows, but resently I needed to set up a test web-server and I thought VB would be ideal for that - the only catch, now that I need the network, I can not get it to work at all or with any consistency.
